When I'm out running, I face many choices on the road. I can choose the flat path on the right instead of the hilly one to the left, or I can run on a road where the wind is at my back or blowing directly in my face. There are times when taking the flat path with the wind at your back is ideal, depending on whether your goal is to test your pace or if you need a break from intense effort—because sometimes you do need that, and it's perfectly okay.
However, if you are always avoiding running the hills or into the wind, you might be missing out on important growth as a runner. Running hills and facing the wind head-on is where real improvement happens as a runner, both physically and mentally. To become a better runner, you have to embrace the challenges of hills and turbulent winds. It’s all about a mindset. If you can shift your mindset to see these obstacles as opportunities to improve your strength, endurance, mindset, and growth, that’s a true game-changer.

Whenever I see a hill now, I choose to get excited and I tell myself, “This is where I grow and become a better runner.” After I finish climbing it, I give myself a genuine high-five and say, “Way to go, Alex!” It has made running hills go from something I would dread as a runner to something I actively seek out. It also makes them easier to climb because I have a positive mindset about them.
Where are you avoiding challenges, like climbing hills or facing strong winds in your life, and instead choosing an easier, flatter path while keeping the wind at your back? Do you ever have a feeling or intuition that if you just turned towards that hill or faced the wind head-on, something better might be on the other side?
The "hill" you're avoiding could be learning something new for your business, posting your first story on Instagram, updating your resume, meal prepping for the week, or finally taking the time to read that book that’s been sitting on your bedside table for months.
The things you are avoiding are often where growth occurs. Growth can be uncomfortable at times, but it is found in the work you are avoiding. What are your “hills” and what are your “head-on winds” in your life? Identify them, tackle them, and face them to discover your growth potential.
