Want Change? Go Slow, to Go Fast

Coach Alex

Have you ever felt stuck in a problem or situation that you just keep encountering in your life, and you can’t seem to change? You feel stuck and you can’t seem to change, “You keep walking in a circle and stubbing your toe on the same rock every time.” You know that feeling? That feeling that there are things you want to change that you know will make your life better, more joyful, healthier, or build more confidence like:

  • Start getting up on time
  • Read more books
  • Spend more time doing your hobbies
  • Organize your home
  • Spend more time with friends/family
  • Drink more water
  • Eat less sugar
  • Build that garden
  • Take that class

One thing that we all tend to do as humans when trying to make a change is to jump from zero to 100 overnight. While this approach may work for a small percentage of people, for most, gradually making small changes will ultimately yield better long-term results. There are numerous sayings that back this idea.

“You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time.”

“A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.”

“Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.”

“We build it brick by brick.”

I could go on and on, but in James Clear’s book, “Atomic Habits” - he says “Making a choice that is 1 percent better or 1 percent worse seems insignificant in the moment, but over the span of moments that make up a lifetime these choices determine the difference between who you are and who you could be. Success is the product of daily habits—not once-in-a-lifetime transformations.”
